Our Maths Vision

At South Camberley, mathematics is about much more than just numbers—it's the key to understanding the world around us. We provide a high-quality mathematics education that equips every child with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive as mathematicians. We aim to develop fluent, flexible thinkers who can reason, problem solve and apply their understanding in real-life situations.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced  (using White Rose & NCETM) to build deep conceptual understanding, ensuring that pupils make secure connections across number, geometry, measure and statistics. We prioritise mathematical talk, exploration and representation so that children can articulate their thinking and develop strong reasoning habits.

A Curriculum Designed for Success

We have developed a rich mathematics curriculum supported by White Rose Maths and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Learning builds logically, step by step, ensuring children develop a deep understanding across number, geometry, measure, and statistics.

We bring mathematics to life by showing children how it connects to real-world situations—from shopping and cooking to architecture and sport. This helps them see the purpose behind what they learn and opens their eyes to future possibilities.

Mathematical talk is at the heart of our approach. We encourage children to explore ideas, represent their thinking in different ways, and explain their reasoning aloud. This builds strong thinking habits from an early age.

Evidence-Informed Teaching in Every Classroom

Our approach is rooted in the latest educational research and we work closely alongside the 'Maths Hub'.

In EYFS, children are taught to understand mathematical concepts of number and shape through daily whole-class teacher input. High-quality adult interactions throughout the learning environment build early number sense and address misconceptions quickly.

Adaptive Teaching: We use a Mastery approach' and within every lesson, adaptive teaching ensures each child is supported with the use of practical resources, tailored scaffolding, and targeted challenges help us remove barriers through highly inclusive practice.

Retrieval Practice: To help children remember what they have learnt, we use daily retrieval practice. By regularly revisiting key methods and concepts, we ensure mathematical knowledge moves securely into long-term memory.

Impact: Confident, Resilient Mathematicians

Our curriculum supports each child's wider development by:

  • Building character — Children learn to persevere, embrace mistakes as learning opportunities, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence and resilience.
  • Securing strong foundations — Fluency in number facts and efficient calculation strategies prepares children fully for the next stage of their education.
  • Developing clear thinkers — Children gain the reasoning skills to explain, justify, and express their mathematical thinking with clarity and confidence.

By the time our children leave our school in year 6, we ensure that the children have:

  •  A positive attitude towards mathematics and a belief that everyone can succeed
  • Fluency in number facts and efficient calculation strategies

  • Confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems with perseverance

  • Reasoning skills that enable them to explain, justify and generalise
