Design & Technology
Our vision for Design Technology is:
- to deliver a creative and inspiring Design Technology curriculum that develops skills to design, make and evaluate
- for children to be curious about the world around them, understanding it better through the exploration of Design Technology
- to provide enriched learning experiences that develop real-life skills, technological expertise and perseverance.
In line with the National Curriculum, we have developed a progressive Design Technology curriculum for the whole school that supports children in making cross-curricular links and providing opportunities to creatively risk-take and problem-solve.
Children will develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to ultimately participate fully in the wider world. In learning to design, build and evaluate, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles and food products with a real-life purpose.
HOW IS DT TAUGHT?
Our D&T curriculum is brought to life through evidence-informed teaching and immersive projects. To ensure a strong standard of education across all year groups, our lessons are divided into key strands:
-
Structures, Mechanisms, and Textiles: children explore how to design, build, and evaluate complex structures and fabrics.
-
Food Technology: These projects focus on food hygiene, seasonality, healthy eating, and practical cooking skills—from making pizzas and soups to nutritious smoothies.
Throughout all lessons, we utilise retrieval practice (regularly revisiting prior learning) to ensure children confidently remember and build upon the skills they learned in previous years. Furthermore, our adaptive teaching ensures that every individual child is supported to achieve their full potential.
Personal Development & Inclusion
- Highly Inclusive Practice: Collaborative D&T projects provide wonderful opportunities for children to develop emotional literacy, teamwork, and effective social skills.
-
Positive Routines: Through practical lessons, we establish positive routines regarding tool safety, hygiene, and active participation—linking good behaviour directly to successful learning outcomes.
-
A Deep Sense of Belonging: Whether they are sewing a textile project or evaluating a structure, every child's unique contribution is valued, ensuring they feel a deep sense of belonging and pride in their work.
Impact: Celebrating Success & Looking Forward
We celebrate our children's hard work through displays across our three sites and on our school social media channels, and through our outstanding achievement awards.
By the time our learners leave us at the end of Year 6, they are equipped with diverse outlooks, practical life skills, and technological expertise. Having benefited from a cohesive, enriching primary experience, they step confidently into secondary school, ready to shape the future.
