Geography

Our Geographical Vision

Our aim is to spark a lifelong curiosity about the world and its people. Geography is a vital part of a child’s holistic development and character building. By exploring diverse cultures, climates, and landscapes, we actively expand our children's' cultural capital, helping every child feel a deep sense of belonging as both a valued member of our local community and an engaged global citizen.

From the very beginning in our Early Years Foundation Stage, we focus on building secure foundations. Within our safe and nurturing environment, even our youngest learners are encouraged to explore their surroundings, ask brilliant questions, and begin making sense of the physical world around them.

How We Teach Geography

We are proud to deliver an ambitious and coherently sequenced curriculum. For parents, this simply means that every geography topic is carefully planned to build logically on what your child has previously learnt, step-by-step, and year-by-year.

To ensure we consistently provide an exceptional education, our team relies on evidence-informed teaching methods. For example, we use retrieval practice—regular, engaging recaps of prior learning—to ensure that essential geographical knowledge and vocabulary stick securely in your child’s long-term memory.

At South Camberley, we are proud of our highly inclusive practice. We ensure every child can fully access and enjoy the wonders of our geography curriculum.

Our lessons bring the world into the classroom and take the classroom out into the world:

  • Immersive Technology: We use iPads, Chromebooks, 'Now Press Play' audio experiences, and Virtual Reality headsets to transport children instantly to the Amazon Rainforest or the Arctic Circle, ensuring equal opportunities for exploration.

  • Hands-On Fieldwork: We make the most of the diverse grounds across our three sites, taking learning outside, so children can create route maps and observe how their local environment changes over time.

  • Enriching Visits: From Year 1's map-reading adventures in Portsmouth to Year 5's vibrant rainforest explorations at Kew Gardens, we bring geographical concepts vividly to life.

The Impact on Your Child

The active, engaging nature of our geography curriculum plays a key role in establishing positive routines, driving both excellent attendance and a genuine enthusiasm for school life. Furthermore, our focus on outdoor fieldwork and environmental learning directly supports our commitment to championing well-being. By connecting with nature, children are given the space to develop their emotional literacy alongside their academic skills.

Our aim is that every child, by the time they leave in Year 6, will have achieved a strong standard of geographical understanding. They will leave us with:

  • An extensive, secure knowledge of local, national, and global locations.

  • A clear understanding of how human and physical environments are deeply connected.

  • The critical thinking and questioning skills needed to confidently explain their findings.

  • An enduring passion and respect for the planet and the diverse people who live on it.
