Music

At South Camberley Primary and Nursery School, we believe that music is a universal language and one of the highest forms of human creativity. As children progress through our school, they have the opportunity to learn a wide range of instruments, to understand and read musical notation, to improvise and compose and have the opportunity to perform.  Music is taught weekly and supported through specialist teaching in KS2.

An Ambitious, Coherently Sequenced Curriculum

In line with the National Curriculum, we have developed a progressive music curriculum which supports children in making cross-curricular links and offers them opportunities to embed the skills they are learning in varied ways. We teach pupils to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

Our music curriculum is ambitious and coherently sequenced, designed to build secure foundations from the Nursery right through to Year 6.

  • Our youngest children begin their musical journey by exploring sounds, songs, and rhythms in a safe and nurturing environment. This early exposure enhances their creativity, imagination, and language development.

  • Children develop core musical skills, learning to use their voices expressively and collaboratively.

  • Children create and compose music on their own and with others, and have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and even explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

  • Pupils deepen their understanding, mastering a variety of instruments and exploring more complex musical notation, composition, and digital production (such as using GarageBand).

We carefully tailor our instruction, adjust instruments, and provide the exact scaffolding each individual child needs to achieve their full potential—whether they are shaking a tambourine for the first time or composing a digital masterpiece.

Cultural Capital & Broadening Horizons

We are dedicated to building our pupils' cultural capital by exposing them to a diverse range of musical instruments, historical periods, traditions, and great composers. Our rich curriculum takes children on a global journey:

  • Specialist Tuition: Children are taught by specialists to play the ukulele, guitar, and versatile woodwind instruments. We even transport them to Africa by teaching them how to play traditional djembe drums!

  • Individual Opportunities: To further expand their horizons, we employ the services of Surrey Arts and partner with The Rock and Pop Foundation, offering individual lessons in classical piano, keyboard, drumming, and guitar.

  • Visits to theatre, musical theatre workshops, choirs,

Character Building & Emotional Literacy

Music is fundamental to championing pupil well-being and emotional literacy at South Camberley. As one pupil proudly told us, "I love singing for my well-being."

Through collaborative music-making, choirs, and performances, children develop incredible confidence, resilience, and character. Highlights such as performing with our school choir at the spectacular Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena, and our cross-school community music festivals, provide memories that last a lifetime. Furthermore, regular rehearsals are highly effective in establishing positive routines, teaching children the vital link between teamwork, dedication, and success.

Enrol for Individual Tuition
