Young Carers

At our school, we recognise that some children may take on additional responsibilities at home, such as helping to care for a family member. These children are known as young carers, and we are committed to making sure they feel supported, understood, and able to thrive in school.

We follow guidance from organisations such as Carers Trust to ensure we provide the right support and create an environment where young carers feel safe to talk and be themselves.

How We Support Young Carers

We have a dedicated Young Carers Champion: Mia Rutherford, who is available to listen, support, and advocate for young carers within school. She helps ensure that children’s needs are understood and that they receive the support they need to succeed.

We also run a Young Carers Club at lunchtimes, providing a welcoming and relaxed space where children can:

  • meet others in similar situations
  • take time out from the busy school day
  • enjoy fun, low-pressure activities
  • build friendships and feel part of a supportive group

Our Approach

We understand that every young carer’s situation is unique. We work closely with families and staff to offer flexible, individualised support. This may include:

  • providing a trusted adult to talk to
  • supporting attendance and wellbeing
  • helping children manage their schoolwork alongside responsibilities at home

Our aim is to ensure that young carers feel valued, included, and able to enjoy their time at school, while being supported to achieve their full potential.

If you think your child may be a young carer, please do not hesitate to get in touch—we are here to help.
