Nurture
At our school, we understand that children learn best when they feel happy, safe, and supported. That’s why we follow the approach of Nurture UK, which focuses on developing children’s social, emotional, and mental wellbeing alongside their learning.
The Principles of Nurture
Our Nurture provision is guided by six key principles:
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally – we meet children where they are in their development and support them to move forward.
- The classroom offers a safe base – we create a calm, predictable environment where children feel secure.
- The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing – positive relationships and care are at the heart of everything we do.
- Language is a vital means of communication – we help children express their thoughts and feelings in a positive way.
- All behaviour is communication – we look beyond behaviour to understand what a child may be feeling or needing.
- The importance of transition in children’s lives – we support children through changes, both big and small.
How We Support Your Child
To understand each child’s individual needs, we use the Boxall Profile. This helps us build a clear picture of your child’s strengths, as well as areas where they may need extra support.
Using this information, we provide small, targeted nurture intervention groups. These sessions are carefully planned and bespoke to each child’s targets from the Boxall Profile, ensuring support is personalised and meaningful.
In nurture groups, children take part in activities that help them to:
- build confidence
- manage emotions
- develop friendships and social skills
- feel more settled and ready to learn
Sessions take place in a warm, supportive environment with consistent routines and trusted adults, helping children feel safe and understood.
We work closely with parents, carers, and school staff to ensure children can apply the skills they learn in nurture sessions across the school day and at home. Our aim is to help every child feel confident, resilient, and ready to succeed.
