Welcome to Year 1!
As we are sadly coming to the end of our fantastic Knights and Castles topic, Year 1 and Year 2 had a Royal Banquet with a special guest - The Queen! Children dressed up, played medieval games and then gathered in the hall for the banquet itself. Children were stunned to silence as The Queen made her appearance. Enjoy looking at the photos!
The pond has been cleared and oxygenating plants have been put in. The children have been pond dipping and using identification sheets to work out what living things they have found. Mrs Gormley put a big stick in the pond to help the frogs jump out as they are too young to do it by themselves at the moment and Brooke in Hawthorn Class had eagle eyes and spotted a dead mouse in the pond which could then be removed. Thank you Brooke and Mrs Gormley!
Trip to Windsor Castle
As part of our Knights and Castles topic, Year 1 paid a visit to Windsor Castle! We all had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Enjoy looking at some of our photos!
Music in Year 1
The children have been learning about materials and Mrs Hollely has taught them all about the sounds different instruments make depending upon what material they are made from. After all the experiences the children have had in their music lessons, Mrs Hollely thought they might be able to guess what instrument was being played from the sound alone. Some children hid behind a curtain in the hall and Mrs Hollely played a lovely song on the piano. When the words in the song said "listen", all the children listened and the children behind the curtain played their instruments.
The children had obviously been paying attention over the previous few weeks as they were able to guess what most of the instruments were.
Mad Science Morning
This term Year 1 have been learning all about materials. As part of our topic, we held a 'Mad Science Morning'which allowed children to experiment with making different textures such as slime, play dough and foam dough. It was extremely messy but great fun!
Year 1 have been developing their science investigation skills. They have been making predictions, thinking about what will change and what will stay the same and recording their results. The children have been trying to find the best material to keep Teddy dry on his picnic.
Year 1 have been busy looking at different containers and learning about the meaning of capacity. They have learnt that capacity means the maximum amount that something can contain. They were challenged to construct a container that had the capacity to hold all of Year 1 at Tall Trees ..... and their teachers! They rose to the challenge and were really proud of their achievement. The container was able to hold 64 people with room to spare!
